Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a serious health issue that should be treated immediately. In its early stages, gum disease is called gingivitis and
is caused by a virulent bacteria found in plaque. If not treated properly,it can cause tooth decay and tooth loss. If left untreated for an extended period of time,
gum disease can lead to other serious health problems. Early warning signs of periodontal disease are swollen, bleeding, or tender gums, and if you are experiencing
these symptoms, we encourage you to contact us today. If caught early, we can help you reverse the damage.
Periodontal Evaluation Dr. Berkovich carefully examines your gums for color changes, bleeding, swelling, and recession.
She also checks for loose and sensitive teeth. Full mouth x-rays can show Dr. Berkovich if there is any bone loss around your teeth.
She may also ask you about your health to see if a pre-existing medical condition, such as diabetes, could be contributing to your periodontal disease.
Periodontal probing helps measure how advanced your disease is. During probing, a tool (probe) measures the depth of space (called the pocket)
between the tooth and the surrounding gum. The deeper the pocket, the more severe the problem.
Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment
Scaling and root planing, also known as a deep cleaning, is the procedure performed by our hygienist that removes the plaque and tarter from below your
gum line. This controls the growth of harmful bacteria. It also helps gums reattach firmly to the teeth. For your comfort, a local anesthetic is used during the
procedure.
In conjunction with or following scaling and root planing, Dr. Berkovich may recommend an additional treatment with an antibiotic called ARESTIN
TM. ARESTIN
TM
is a prescription drug approved by the FDA for the treatment of gum disease after scaling and root planing. ARESTIN
TM
uses unique micro-sphere technology to deliver the antibiotic directly to the infected areas in your gums. The micro-spheres then gradually release the antibiotic,
allowing it to work for at least 14 days so that it can kill the infection more effectively and help heal your gums.
After periodontal treatment has been completed, it is crucial to maintain routine dental cleanings and examinations. Please contact our office if you have
any questions about non-surgical periodontal treatment. We will be happy to assist you in any way possible.
